How the data works

Geolocation comes from MaxMind's GeoLite2 City and ASN databases. We download them to our own servers and query them locally, which has two consequences worth knowing: lookups are fast (typically under a millisecond of database time), and the addresses you look up are never sent to a third party.

The databases are checked for updates every 24 hours and swapped in without dropping a request. MaxMind publishes new builds twice a week, so the data is never more than about a day behind the latest release. Every response includes meta.databaseVersion so you can see exactly which build answered you.

Honest accuracy

IP geolocation is city-level at best, and often much coarser. Rather than hide that, every response includes an accuracyRadius in kilometres, and the map on this site draws that radius instead of dropping a confident pin on someone's street. If a well-known anycast address like 8.8.8.8 is accurate to within 1000 km, we say so.

What we believe

• No surprise bills. Exceeding your quota returns HTTP 429, never an overage charge.
• No tracking. No advertising cookies, no analytics trackers, and we do not store the addresses you look up.
• A usable free tier. 45 requests a minute with no key and no account, because evaluating an API should not require a credit card.
• Documentation that matches reality. Every field in the docs is a field the API actually returns.
